A sub-dial is a smaller, subsidiary dial set within the main dial of a watch — used to display additional information beyond basic hours and minutes. Sub-dials appear on chronographs to display elapsed seconds, minutes, and hours; on GMT watches to display a second time zone; on watches with running seconds to isolate the seconds display from the main dial; and on any complication requiring a separate display register. The size, position, and finishing of sub-dials are reference-specific design elements — part of the visual identity of the watch and a primary point of comparison in QC evaluation.
In replica watches, sub-dial quality is assessed across the same criteria as the main dial — printing sharpness, color accuracy, index alignment, and surface finish — with the additional requirement that sub-dial placement and size match the reference geometry exactly. At high-end grade, sub-dials are correctly positioned, correctly sized, and finished to the same standard as the main dial. At lower grades, off-center sub-dials, incorrect register sizes, and inconsistent finishing between the main dial and sub-dial surfaces are common failures visible in straight-on QC photos.
In Practice
- Sub-dial placement accuracy is the primary quality check. Each sub-dial should sit centered on its correct position — typically at 3, 6, or 9 o'clock on chronograph references, or at 6 o'clock on running seconds references. A sub-dial that is visibly off-center or positioned slightly higher or lower than specified is a dial production tolerance failure visible in any straight-on QC photo.
- Sub-dial size relative to the main dial is reference-specific. The diameter of each register is a defined design element — a sub-dial that reads as too large or too small relative to the main dial diameter does not match the reference proportions. This proportion check is most reliable when comparing the QC photo directly against a reference image at the same scale.
- Index and numeral quality within sub-dials follows the same criteria as the main dial. Text should be sharp, numerals correctly spaced, and any lume application within sub-dial indices consistent with the main dial lume. Soft printing or inconsistent index spacing within a sub-dial indicates lower production precision than the main dial received.
- Sub-dial surface finish should match the main dial specification. A sunburst sub-dial on a matte main dial, or a matte sub-dial register on a sunburst main dial, is a finishing specification error. The relationship between sub-dial and main dial surface treatments is reference-specific and part of the overall dial design.
- Hands within sub-dials should be correctly proportioned for the register size. A chronograph sub-seconds hand that extends beyond the sub-dial chapter ring, or one that is too short to reach the outer markings, is incorrectly sized for the register. Hand length within sub-dials is a detail-level quality indicator assessable in close QC photos.
