Anti-reflective coating — also referred to as AR coating or anti-glare coating — is a thin optical layer applied to one or both surfaces of a watch crystal to reduce light reflection and improve dial visibility. Without AR coating, light reflecting off the crystal surface obscures the dial under bright or angled lighting conditions. With correctly applied AR coating, the crystal becomes effectively transparent — the dial reads clearly regardless of light direction.
In replica watches, AR coating is standard at high-end grade and applied to sapphire crystals. At lower grades, crystals are frequently uncoated or coated on one surface only. The difference is visible in QC photos and immediately apparent in person — an uncoated crystal on a dark dial produces significant glare under indoor lighting, obscuring the dial detail that the rest of the watch's finishing is designed to present.
In Practice
- The visual signature of correctly applied AR coating is a faint blue or green tint visible when the crystal is viewed under angled light. This tint is not a flaw — it is the optical byproduct of the coating's interference layer. A crystal that shows no tint under angled light is either uncoated or coated with a very thin single layer.
- Double-sided AR coating — applied to both the inner and outer crystal surfaces — produces the best clarity. Single-sided coating reduces outer surface reflection but leaves inner surface reflection, which can still obscure dial detail under certain lighting conditions. At high-end grade, double-sided coating is the specification.
- AR coating is applied after the crystal is shaped and before installation. Coating quality varies — thin or unevenly applied coatings show inconsistent tint across the crystal surface in QC photos, or peel at the crystal edge under daily wear.
- AR coating is more susceptible to damage than the sapphire beneath it. Harsh cleaning agents, abrasive cloths, and ultrasonic cleaners can strip or damage the coating layer. Cleaning with a soft microfiber cloth and avoiding chemical contact preserves coating integrity over time.
- In QC photos, check for consistent tint across the full crystal surface under angled light. A patchy or absent tint on a crystal claimed to be AR-coated indicates either no coating or uneven application — both of which affect dial visibility in daily wear conditions.
