Indices are the hour markers on a watch dial — the visual reference points that allow the wearer to read the time. They appear in a wide range of forms: applied metal batons, printed numerals, diamond-set markers, luminous plots, or combinations of these. The form, material, and execution of the indices are reference-specific — part of the design identity of the watch — and their accuracy in a replica is one of the most scrutinized details in QC evaluation.
In replica watches, index quality varies significantly across grades. Applied indices — physically mounted to the dial surface — require precise placement, consistent height, and clean edges. Printed indices require sharp, correctly weighted printing with accurate color. At high-end grade, indices are correctly formed, evenly spaced, and finished to match the reference. At lower grades, uneven spacing, incorrect proportions, poorly filled lume, and misaligned applied markers are common failures.
In Practice
- Applied indices should sit flush and level on the dial surface. An index that is visibly tilted, raised at one end, or not centered on its hour position is a placement tolerance issue — visible in close QC photos taken at a slight angle to the dial.
- Lume fill quality is a reliable grade indicator. Correctly filled indices have even, consistent lume within the marker boundary — not overflowing at the edges, not partially filled, not showing air bubbles or surface irregularities. Lume quality is best assessed under the QC photo's direct lighting conditions.
- Index proportions should match the reference. A baton index that is too wide, too narrow, or too short relative to the dial diameter does not match the original geometry — a difference that becomes apparent when comparing the replica dial to a reference photo side by side.
- Spacing consistency around the dial is a quality indicator independent of index type. Indices should be evenly distributed at their hour positions — not crowded toward one side or unevenly spaced between the 3 and 9 o'clock positions where the date window or subdial may affect placement.
- The finishing on applied metal indices — polished, brushed, or faceted — should be consistent across all markers. An index with a polished face and a visible machining mark on its side, or a set of indices where some are polished and others are not, indicates inconsistent finishing at the component level.
