Superluminova is a photoluminescent material applied to watch dials, hands, and bezel indices to provide visibility in low-light conditions. It absorbs ambient light — natural or artificial — and re-emits it as a green or blue glow in darkness. Unlike radioactive luminous materials used in older watches, Superluminova is non-toxic and non-radioactive. It is the dominant lume material in modern watchmaking, appearing on sport, dive, and tool references where dark-condition legibility is a design requirement. The material is produced by RC Tritec in Switzerland and licensed to watch manufacturers — the name refers specifically to this proprietary compound, though generic photoluminescent materials with similar properties are widely used in replica production.

In replica watches, lume quality varies significantly across grades. The material itself — a photoluminescent compound — is not difficult to source, but correct application requires even fill within the index or hand cavity, correct surface level, and sufficient material density for strong light output. At high-end grade, lume plots are evenly filled, flush with the dial or hand surface, and produce a strong, consistent glow after brief light exposure. At lower grades, uneven fill, bubbled surfaces, recessed lume plots, and weak or inconsistent glow output are common — all assessable in QC photos and in darkness after charging.

In Practice

  • Fill consistency is the primary lume quality indicator in QC photos. Each lume plot — whether on an index, hand, or bezel pip — should be evenly filled to the boundary of its cavity with no gaps, thin spots, or overflow at the edges. An index that is partially filled or shows a lighter area within the plot indicates incomplete application or material shrinkage during curing.
  • Surface level affects both appearance and light output. Lume that sits flush with the surrounding dial or hand surface reads as clean and intentional. Lume that is recessed below the surface catches less ambient light and charges less efficiently — reducing glow output in darkness. Lume that sits proud of the surface is over-applied and may show edge cracking over time.
  • Lume color consistency across all plots is a production quality indicator. All indices on the same dial should glow the same color and intensity after identical light exposure. A dial where some indices glow brighter than others, or where the color shifts between green and blue across different plots, indicates inconsistent material density or different lume compounds used across the same dial.
  • Glow duration after charging varies by material density and application thickness. A correctly applied lume plot on a high-end grade replica maintains readable glow for several hours after a brief charge under direct light. Weak lume that fades within minutes of light exposure has either insufficient material density or was applied too thinly to store adequate light energy.
  • Lume on hands should align with lume on dial indices when the hands sweep over them. A hand whose lume plot is offset from center — visible when the seconds hand sweeps past a 12 o'clock index — indicates a hand fitment or lume placement tolerance issue. This alignment check is only possible in a functioning watch and cannot be assessed from static QC photos.
