Lume Types

The two lume compounds encountered in replica watches are not interchangeable — they differ in glow intensity, duration, and color.

  • SuperLuminova is the photoluminescent compound used in genuine watches across most major references. It is available in multiple color grades — C1, C3, C5, BGW9, and others — each producing a different glow color in darkness, typically green or blue-white. At high-end replica grade, SuperLuminova or a direct equivalent compound is used, producing glow intensity and duration consistent with the reference specification.
  • Generic luminous compound is the standard at mid-tier and lower replica grades. It produces a visible glow in darkness but typically at lower intensity and shorter duration than SuperLuminova. Color accuracy in darkness — whether the glow matches the reference specification — is rarely a priority at these grades. The compound is applied using the same methods as higher grades but the material itself performs differently.

In Practice

  • Lume color consistency across all indices and hands is the primary daylight quality check. Every lume plot on the dial — across all applied indices, the hour hand, the minute hand, and any additional hands carrying lume — should be identical in color. A dial where some indices appear cream, others appear white, and the hands appear a different shade again indicates inconsistent compound mixing or application across the dial components. This is visible in any well-lit straight-on QC photo.
  • Fill level within applied indices is a precision indicator. On references where lume fills a recessed cavity on the top face of each applied index, the fill should be level with the index surface — not sunken below it, not raised above it, and not overflowing onto the polished side walls of the index. Sunken lume indicates underfill; overflow onto the index walls indicates poor application control. Both are visible in close QC photos.
  • Lume plot shape on hands should follow the reference specification. On references where the hour hand carries a rectangular lume plot within a recessed frame, that geometry should be accurately reproduced — the lume should fill the recess cleanly with straight edges. On references with a circular lume dot on the GMT or seconds hand, the dot should be round and correctly centered on the hand body. Irregular edges, asymmetric fills, and off-center plots are application precision failures.
  • Glow performance is assessed separately from daylight appearance. A lume that looks correct in QC photos may still perform poorly in darkness if a lower-grade compound was used. Glow intensity — how brightly the lume emits immediately after light exposure — and glow duration — how long it remains visible — are both compound-quality indicators. At high-end grade, lume should remain clearly visible for several hours after a brief light charge. At lower grades, the glow may fade to near-invisible within thirty to sixty minutes.
  • Lume color in darkness is reference-specific on high-end references. BGW9 compound produces a blue-white glow; C3 produces a green glow. On references where the genuine watch specifies BGW9 — producing the characteristic blue-white nighttime appearance — a replica using generic green-glowing compound is off-specification in darkness even if the daylight appearance is accurate. This detail is rarely verifiable from standard QC photos and requires a dedicated dark-condition photo.

Common Mistakes

  • Evaluating lume quality only under daylight conditions. Daylight QC photos confirm application precision and color consistency but do not confirm compound quality or glow performance. If lume performance in darkness matters, request a dedicated dark-condition photo after a brief light charge — this is the only reliable way to assess glow intensity and duration before purchase.
  • Overlooking color consistency across dial components. Hands and indices are often produced separately and lumed in different batches. Color inconsistency between the hand lume and the index lume — visible as a difference in cream, white, or yellow tone — is a common mid-tier production issue that is easy to miss when evaluating hands and indices individually rather than as a complete set.
  • Assuming lume compound type from price tier alone. Lume compound specification varies by reference and by factory, not strictly by price tier. Confirming the compound used — and whether it matches the reference specification — requires checking the product description rather than inferring from the overall grade of the watch.
