Dynamic pressure is the pressure generated by movement through water — the additional force acting on a watch case when the wearer moves, impacts the water surface, or changes depth rapidly. Unlike static pressure, which increases predictably with depth, dynamic pressure is variable and can exceed a watch's static rating at depths well within the rated limit.

The practical consequence: a watch rated to 100m / 10 ATM does not perform equivalently at 100 meters of dynamic depth. A diver moving through water generates pressure spikes that a stationary test at the same depth would not. This is why ISO 6425 requires a minimum 200m rating for a watch to be formally classified as a diver's instrument — the safety margin compensates for the difference between static and dynamic conditions.

In Practice

  • Diving from height, jumping into water, or impact with a hard water surface generates brief but significant dynamic pressure spikes — sufficient to exceed a 5 ATM or 10 ATM static rating at shallow depths.
  • For casual use — swimming, showering, hand-washing — dynamic pressure is not a relevant concern. The forces involved are within static rating margins at normal ATM levels.
  • Dynamic pressure is the reason that a watch rated to 30m / 3 ATM is not suitable for swimming, despite water at the pool surface exerting only a fraction of 3 ATM of static pressure. Movement adds the remainder.
  • In the replica context, dynamic pressure is most relevant when a buyer intends to use the watch in activities that generate pressure spikes — and therefore needs to evaluate whether the crown mechanism and seals are built to the tolerances that make the stated ATM rating reliable under dynamic conditions, not just static ones.
