Pressure testing is the process of exposing a sealed watch to controlled water or air pressure to verify that the case holds its rated water resistance. In a standard test, the watch is placed in a pressure chamber, pressure is applied to the rated ATM level, and the case is inspected for moisture ingress or pressure drop. A watch that passes holds its rating; one that fails has a seal failure, case gap, or tolerance issue that is not visible externally.
Pressure testing is the only reliable method of verifying water resistance in practice — not ratings, not visual inspection, not QC photos. A watch can appear correctly assembled and still fail a pressure test due to an undersized gasket, a loose crown tube, or a caseback that seats slightly off-center.
In Practice
- Pressure testing is standard practice at genuine watch manufacturers. It is not standard practice in the replica supply chain — which is why ATM ratings on replica listings are design specifications, not verified test outcomes.
- At high-end grade, the physical tolerances — gasket fit, crown tube dimensions, caseback seating — are close enough to the design specification that pressure test results would be consistent. At lower grades, tolerance variation means results would be inconsistent even across identical models.
- A buyer who needs verified water resistance for active use can have a replica pressure tested by a watchmaker. The test is non-destructive, typically inexpensive, and provides a concrete answer where the listing provides only an intent.
- After any servicing that involves opening the case — movement inspection, regulation, cleaning — the watch should be pressure tested before returning it to water use. Reassembly does not guarantee the original seal integrity.
