A screw-down crown is a crown that locks into the case by threading — rotating clockwise to engage with the crown tube until it seats flush against the case. In the locked position, the O-ring or tube seal inside the crown is compressed under thread tension, creating a mechanically reinforced water barrier at the most vulnerable point of entry on the case. It must be manually unscrewed before the crown can be pulled out to set time or wind the movement, and re-engaged after.
The screw-down crown is the standard crown design on dive watches and any reference rated above 100m. It is present on some of the most widely replicated references in the market. At high-end grade, the crown, crown tube, and threading are manufactured to the tolerances required for the mechanism to function as intended — not merely to look correct in photos.
In Practice
- The seal a screw-down crown provides is only active when the crown is fully engaged. A crown that is partially screwed or left in a pulled position provides no more water protection than a push-pull crown.
- At lower replica grades, screw-down crowns are common in appearance but inconsistent in function. Threads are often cut to loose tolerances that allow the crown to engage without compressing the seal evenly — or at all.
- In QC photos, check that the crown sits flush with the case in the locked position. A crown that sits proud — slightly raised or uneven — has not seated correctly, either due to thread tolerance issues or an incorrectly sized seal.
- Crown feel is informative. A properly functioning screw-down crown has a defined, progressive resistance as it engages — not a loose spin or a sudden stop. This cannot be assessed from photos; it requires handling or a seller-provided video.
