When an electrical current from a battery is applied to the crystal, it oscillates at a precise frequency — typically 32,768 Hz — which an integrated circuit divides down to produce one pulse per second, advancing a stepper motor that drives the hands. Because the oscillation frequency of quartz is far higher and more stable than that of a mechanical balance wheel, quartz movements are significantly more accurate than mechanical calibres under normal conditions — typically within ±15 seconds per month compared to the ±10–30 seconds per day of an unregulated mechanical movement. Quartz movements require no winding, are unaffected by positional variation, and need only a battery replacement every one to two years under normal use.
