- Stone coverage density follows the reference specification. On references where the genuine dial carries full pavé coverage — stones set edge to edge across the complete dial surface — the replica should replicate this density. - Dial text and any remaining dial elements should remain legible on a pavé dial. On references where the brand name, reference text, or indices are present on a pavé-set dial, these elements should be clearly visible and not obscured by stone overspill or setting metal. Legibility of dial text on a pavé surface is a production precision indicator — maintaining clean text on a heavily set surface requires controlled stone placement around the text elements.
Common Mistakes
- Evaluating stone quality from diffused indoor photos. Diffused or flat lighting does not activate the light dispersion properties of any stone — moissanite, CZ, and lower-grade simulated stones can appear similar under flat light. Stone quality is revealed under direct light, where the difference in fire and brilliance between stone types becomes immediately apparent. Always request at least one QC photo taken under direct light when evaluating a pavé dial.
- Overlooking setting consistency in favor of overall coverage. A dial that appears fully covered with stones in a straight-on photo may still have setting inconsistencies — tilted stones, variable heights, or insecure settings — that are only visible in angled shots or close crops. Coverage and setting quality are separate evaluation criteria that both require attention.
- Assuming stone type from price tier without confirming the specification. Stone type in pavé replica dials should be confirmed from the product description rather than inferred from the overall grade of the watch. Some mid-tier productions use moissanite on pavé references as a specific selling point; others use CZ across all grades. Confirming the stone type before purchase is the only reliable approach.
